Helping You Choose The Right Chinchilla Cage
What You Want
- A cage that you have room for in your house
- A cage that is comfortable and spacious for your chinchilla
- A cage that will serve you for a long time
- A cage that is easy to maintain (cleaning, easy to open and close and access everything inside easily)
- A cage that will fit your chinchilla cage accessories
Recommended Cage Dimensions
Knowing this is important because of the people who want to build their own cages and also to avoid buying a cage that is not recommended for chinchillas.
- 30″w x 18″d x 48″h that is 76cm x 45cm x 121cm
- 30” w x 24” d x 48” h that is 76cm x 60cm x 121cm
Important Tips
- The BIGGER the better. (If you can get a cage bigger than the above dimensions, get it, but remember to consider maintenance) Chinchillas love to run, play and jump. The floor should be solid. Wire floors hurt your chinchilla’s feet. Glass tanks should be avoided as well due to lack of proper ventilation.
- Heat is bad news to chinchillas. Keep the environment of your chinchilla as close to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius) as possible. Humidity should be lower than 40%. Keep that cage away from direct sunlight.
- When it comes to chinchillas’ cages, cheap is expensive. Do not look for the cheapest, look for quality.
- CAUTION: Chinchillas chew on everything especially plastic, try and avoid plastic.
Recommended Cage Options To Choose From
OPTION # 1. Double Unit Ferret Nation Cages or Critter Nation Cages
This option is used by most Chinchilla owners.
These cages are the easiest to clean. They may be pricey, but are the best for chinchillas. The difference between the critter nation and the ferret nation is the spacing between bars. The critter nation has smaller spacing than the ferret nation.
The Double (as shown in the image on the left) is preferred. However, if you are tight on budget, get a single first and then you can add on another single on top later. We will show you below how the single looks in option 2.

OPTION # 2. Single Unit Ferret Nation Cages or Critter Nation Cages
As mention above, this is the single unit. It is not very suitable, but can be used if you are on a budget and then later on add a top layer to it to make it a double unit. To ensure you are providing the best chinchilla care when having this, let your chinchilla out as many times as possible for exercise.
